From Our World to Yours

Hi everyone!

This month has been full of sunshine, discovery and lots of time outdoors. We loved making the most of the warm weather, and with the Summer Solstice bringing the longest day of the year, we were fascinated that it could still be bright outside when it was time to go home! It sparked lots of conversations about the changing seasons, daylight and how nature changes throughout the year.

Inside the nursery, we've continued exploring some exciting new open-ended projects inspired by Hayley and Tina's recent study visit to Reggio Emilia. Rather than creating something once and moving on, we've been revisiting materials like clay and paper over several weeks, discovering new possibilities each time. Every time we returned, our ideas became a little more adventurous as we tested our own theories, solved problems and explored what these fascinating materials could do.

Hayley and Tina have also written about everything they learnt during their time in Reggio Emilia and how it is continuing to shape life at KatieB Kids. If you'd like to read more about the inspiration behind many of the experiences we're now enjoying, you can find their reflections here.

Understanding Children's Core Needs and Behaviour

At KatieB Kids, we believe behaviour is not something to be managed- it is something to be understood.

Every behaviour, whether joyful, challenging, quiet or energetic, is a form of communication. Beneath what we see on the surface is often an underlying need that a child is trying to express in the best way they can with the skills and brain development they currently have.

When we begin with curiosity rather than judgement, we create the conditions for children to feel safe, understood and ready to thrive.

What does this mean?

All children have core emotional needs that underpin their wellbeing. When these needs are consistently met, children are more likely to feel secure, emotionally regulated and ready to learn.

These core needs include:

• Security- to feel safe and protected.

• Relationships- to feel loved, connected and accepted.

• Independence- to feel capable, trusted and confident.

• Engagement- to explore, play and participate.

• Fulfilment- to experience challenge, achievement and success.

• Contribution- to feel valued and know they make a difference.

• Growth- to learn, develop and make progress.

As educators, our role is not simply to respond to behaviour, but to notice when one or more of these needs may not be fully met and respond with care, empathy and understanding.

Looking beneath the surface

When children feel unsafe, overwhelmed or unable to cope, their brain activates a natural stress response. At these moments, behaviour is often the nervous system's way of communicating, "I need help."

This may present as the familiar Fight, Flight or Freeze response.

A child experiencing a stress response may:

• lash out, shout or become aggressive (Fight)

• run away, hide or avoid situations (Flight)

• become quiet, withdrawn or appear to "shut down" (Freeze)

These responses are not deliberate choices to misbehave. They are automatic survival responses that occur when a child's brain perceives a situation as overwhelming or threatening.

Rather than asking, "How do we stop this behaviour?", we encourage ourselves to ask:

• What is this behaviour communicating?

• Which core need might this child be trying to express?

• What does this child need from me right now?

When we understand behaviour as communication, we naturally move from correction towards connection.

What children gain from this

When children experience adults who seek to understand the need beneath the behaviour, they gradually develop the skills to regulate themselves.

They learn:

• emotional security and trust

• confidence in expressing their needs

• resilience through supportive relationships

• stronger emotional regulation

• empathy for others

• a positive sense of self and belonging

Most importantly, children learn that all feelings are acceptable, even when some behaviours need support and guidance. They discover that trusted adults will help them navigate big emotions safely, rather than simply expecting them to cope alone.

To try at home

The next time your child displays behaviour that feels challenging, try pausing before reacting.

Instead of asking, "How do I stop this?", ask yourself:

• Could my child be feeling unsafe, overwhelmed or disconnected?

• Which of their core needs might they be trying to communicate?

• Do they need comfort before correction?

• How can I help them feel safe enough to regulate?

Sometimes the most powerful response isn't another instruction. It may be sitting alongside them, offering reassurance, acknowledging their feelings, or simply helping them feel seen and understood.

When children experience connection first, they are far more able to learn from guidance afterwards. Behaviour is rarely about giving us a hard time; it is much more often a child having a hard time. By looking beneath the surface, we help children build the emotional foundations that will support them for life.

The Organiser of the Environment

At KatieB Kids, we believe that the environment is far more than the backdrop to children's learning. It is an active participant in the educational experience, communicating messages about belonging, possibility, respect and curiosity, long before an adult says a word.

As part of our Let's Nurture Futures™ framework, The Organiser of the Environment aspiration encourages educators to thoughtfully design spaces that invite exploration, independence and meaningful learning. Every decision, from the placement of resources to the quality of light entering a room, is made with children's development, wellbeing and sense of agency in mind.

What does this mean?

Being an organiser of the environment means understanding that children are deeply influenced by the spaces they spend time in. Carefully prepared environments encourage children to become confident explorers, capable decision-makers and active participants in their own learning.

Rather than filling rooms with excessive colour, noise or resources, we strive to create calm, purposeful spaces where each area has intention. Resources are presented thoughtfully, often in natural baskets, trays or open shelving, making them accessible and inviting while encouraging children to make independent choices.

Our environments are continually evolving in response to children's interests, developmental needs and emerging ideas. An interest in insects may inspire a nature investigation area, a fascination with transport may lead to a collaborative construction space, while children's questions about light may transform part of the room into an exploration studio.

We also recognise that the outdoor environment is equally important. Gardens, natural materials and opportunities to experience the changing seasons provide rich contexts for investigation, physical development, creativity and emotional wellbeing.

Finding the balance

An inspiring environment is not one that is constantly changing or overflowing with resources. Children need familiarity, consistency and time to revisit experiences just as much as they benefit from novelty.

At KatieB Kids, we carefully balance stability with responsiveness. Core areas remain predictable and accessible, providing children with confidence and security, while enhancements are introduced thoughtfully to extend learning without overwhelming them.

We also understand that an effective environment supports every child differently. Some children seek quiet, cosy spaces where they can regulate and reflect, while others are drawn to collaborative areas full of movement, investigation and conversation. Our role is to ensure there are opportunities for every child to feel safe, capable and inspired.

What children gain from this

When children spend time in carefully organised environments, they develop much more than independence. They learn to care for shared spaces, make thoughtful choices, solve problems and take ownership of their learning.

Accessible resources encourage children to initiate their own ideas rather than waiting for adult direction. Calm, well-organised spaces support concentration, emotional regulation and sustained engagement, allowing children to explore concepts in greater depth.

Perhaps most importantly, thoughtfully prepared environments communicate an important message to every child: you belong here, you are trusted, and your ideas matter. This helps children develop confidence, curiosity and a genuine sense of responsibility for the world around them.

A simple idea to try at home

Choose one small area of your home that your child uses regularly, perhaps a shelf, a craft corner or a book basket. Arrange a small number of resources neatly within easy reach and invite your child to choose, use and return them independently.

You might say:

• "Which activity would you like to choose today?"

• "Where do you think this belongs when you've finished?"

• "How could we make this space inviting for tomorrow?"

Sometimes, making small changes to the environment can have a big impact on children's confidence, independence and willingness to explore. By creating spaces that are calm, accessible and thoughtfully organised, we empower children to become active participants in their own learning every day.

Bringing the Outside In

At KatieB Kids, we believe children's connection with nature shouldn't end when they step indoors. While time outside remains an essential part of childhood, we also thoughtfully weave nature throughout our indoor environments through a concept known as biophilic design.

Biophilic design simply means creating spaces that help people feel connected to the natural world by incorporating natural materials, textures, colours and living elements into everyday environments.

What does this mean?

Children have an innate affinity for nature. Research increasingly suggests that environments rich in natural elements can support children's wellbeing, emotional regulation, attention and curiosity.

Throughout our nursery, you'll find nature woven into the children's everyday experiences. From trailing plants and natural fabrics to collections of pinecones, shells and seasonal treasures on our nature tables, these features are much more than decoration. They invite children to touch, observe, investigate and wonder.

Even our life-sized blossom tree, created from branches salvaged after storm damage, tells a story about valuing and repurposing natural materials rather than simply replacing them.

Biophilic design is particularly valuable for children growing up in urban environments, where regular access to green spaces may be limited. By bringing elements of the natural world indoors, we help ensure that children experience the calming and restorative benefits of nature every day, whatever the weather.

What children gain from this

• a stronger connection to the natural world

• calm, nurturing environments that support emotional wellbeing

• curiosity and a desire to explore

• rich sensory experiences through natural materials and textures

• growing awareness of seasons and environmental change

• respect and care for the living world

Children begin to understand that nature isn't somewhere we visit occasionally; it is something we can live alongside, care for and learn from every day.

To try at home

You don't need to redesign your home to enjoy the benefits of biophilic design. Small changes can make a meaningful difference.

You could try:

• creating a simple nature table with seasonal treasures collected on family walks

• introducing a child-friendly houseplant for your child to help care for

• using baskets, wood and other natural materials in play spaces

• opening the windows to listen to birdsong or playing gentle nature sounds indoors

• displaying flowers, leaves or interesting natural objects to spark conversation and curiosity

By bringing the outside in, we create spaces that feel calmer, richer and more connected. Whether indoors or outdoors, these everyday encounters with nature help nurture children's wellbeing, curiosity and lifelong respect for the world around them.

Taking the First Steps Towards Potty Training

For many families, potty training is one of the first big milestones towards independence. While every child reaches this stage in their own time, the warmer summer months can often provide a wonderful opportunity to begin. Lighter clothing, more time outdoors and fewer layers can make the process feel a little easier and more relaxed for both children and adults.

At KatieB Kids, we believe potty training should never be rushed. Instead, we aim to create a calm, positive experience that helps children feel confident, secure and ready to take this important step.

What does this mean?

There is no "perfect" age to start potty training. Every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is far more important than age alone. Current NHS guidance suggests many children begin to show signs of readiness between 18 months and 2 years, although some children will be ready sooner and others later.

Some signs your child may be ready include:

• telling you when they are wet or dirty

• recognising when they are weeing or pooing

• staying dry for an hour or more

• letting you know they are about to go

You don't need to wait until every sign is present. If your child is beginning to show awareness and curiosity, it may be a good time to gently introduce the idea.

At KatieB Kids, we encourage families to introduce a potty into the home as early as possible, allowing it to become a familiar part of the environment without any pressure to use it. We also work closely with parents so that home and nursery provide a consistent, reassuring approach.

Perhaps most importantly, we remember that accidents are not setbacks- they are a completely normal part of learning. Children develop confidence when they feel supported rather than pressured.

What children gain from this

• growing independence and self-confidence

• greater awareness of their own body

• resilience through learning a new skill

• pride in achieving important milestones

• confidence through calm, consistent encouragement

• security from knowing trusted adults are working together

Children thrive when they are given the time, patience and reassurance to develop at their own pace. Potty training is not simply about learning to use the toilet- it's about building confidence in themselves.

To try at home

If your child is beginning to show signs of readiness, you could try:

• introducing a potty into the home environment

• choosing a time when life feels calm and unhurried

• dressing your child in lightweight, easy-to-remove clothing during the warmer weather

• watching for signs they may need the toilet and gently encouraging them to sit on the potty

• offering plenty of drinks to create regular opportunities to practise

• responding calmly to accidents and celebrating effort rather than perfection

• letting your child's key person know when you begin, so we can provide a consistent approach together

Remember, if your child becomes distressed or resistant, it is perfectly okay to pause and try again a few weeks later. Potty training isn't a race, and taking a step back can often lead to greater success when your child feels truly ready. By working together, we can help children approach this milestone with confidence, positivity and a growing sense of independence.

Friendship: Nurturing Connection and Belonging

At KatieB Kids, we often reflect on the themes shared through our mindfulness work with Dr Nick Buckley. As we approach the International Day of Friendship on 30th July, we are reminded that friendship is far more than simply having people to play with. It is about connection, trust, compassion and belonging.

Friendship helps us feel accepted for who we are, teaches us to understand different perspectives and reminds us that we all thrive through positive relationships.

For young children, these early experiences of friendship lay the foundations for emotional wellbeing that can last a lifetime.

What does this mean?

Friendship is one of the first ways children begin to experience empathy, cooperation and shared humanity. Through playing, negotiating, comforting one another and resolving disagreements, children learn that relationships are built through kindness, patience and mutual respect.

As Dr Nick reminds us, friendship also encourages us to look beyond those who are most familiar to us. Sometimes the most meaningful friendships are formed with people we might never have expected to connect with.

At nursery, this might mean inviting someone new into a game, noticing when another child needs help, celebrating each other's successes or learning that everyone has different interests, personalities and ways of seeing the world.

When children experience warm, trusting relationships, they not only develop socially but also emotionally. Feeling connected helps children feel safe, valued and confident enough to explore, learn and be themselves.

For young children, friendship may look like:

• learning to share and take turns

• showing kindness and compassion towards others

• welcoming new children into play

• learning to resolve small disagreements with support

• developing empathy by recognising how others may feel

At KatieB Kids, we believe friendships don't simply happen by chance. They grow through everyday moments of connection, belonging and shared experiences, supported by caring adults who model warmth, inclusion and respect.

To try at home

Friendship can be nurtured through simple everyday conversations and experiences.

You could try:

• talking together about what makes a good friend

• encouraging your child to notice when someone may need kindness or help

• arranging opportunities to play with different children, not just familiar friends

• modelling curiosity by speaking positively about people from different backgrounds and experiences

• celebrating acts of kindness, generosity and inclusion when you notice them

For yourself as a parent, you might also reflect on Dr Nick Buckley's gentle challenge:

"How might I widen my own circle of friendship?"

Small moments of connection matter- for children and adults alike. Whether it's chatting to another parent at the park, welcoming a new family into your community or reaching out to someone you've not spoken to for a while, friendship has a remarkable way of strengthening not only those around us, but our own wellbeing too.

When we experience genuine connection and belonging, our bodies release hormones such as oxytocin that help us feel calm, safe and supported. In this way, nurturing friendship is not only an act of kindness towards others- it is also an important act of self-care.

Seeing the World in a Different Light

This month, the children have been immersed in exploring light, dark and shadows, inspired by the beautiful provocation spaces found in the infant-toddler centres of Reggio Emilia.

Using adjustable spotlights, the children have illuminated small-world scenes, investigated transparent coloured blocks and materials, experimented with shadows, and discovered how changing the direction, distance and angle of light transforms what they see.

What does this mean?

Light is one of the most open-ended resources we can offer children. It invites curiosity without prescribing an outcome, encouraging children to become investigators, scientists, artists and storytellers all at once.

As children shine light through coloured blocks, reflective materials and translucent fabrics, they begin to notice patterns, colour mixing, transparency and shadow. They ask questions, make predictions, test ideas and delight in unexpected discoveries.

Unlike many traditional toys, light has no single purpose. It changes depending on how children choose to interact with it, making every exploration unique and child-led.

This approach reflects the Reggio Emilia belief that environments should provoke thinking rather than simply provide entertainment. Carefully designed invitations encourage children to slow down, observe closely and revisit ideas from different perspectives.

What children gain from this

• curiosity and scientific thinking

• creativity and imaginative exploration

• understanding of light, colour and shadow

• problem-solving and critical thinking skills

• sustained concentration and deep engagement

• confidence to explore through trial and discovery

Children begin to understand that learning isn't always about finding the "right" answer. Sometimes, it starts with wondering, experimenting and asking, "What happens if...?"

To try at home

Exploring light doesn't require specialist equipment. Everyday moments can become fascinating investigations.

You could try:

• using a torch to create shadows on a wall or ceiling

• shining light through coloured plastic, cellophane or translucent objects

• exploring reflections using mirrors or shiny household items

• making shadow puppets together before bedtime

• noticing how sunlight changes throughout the day and the different shadows it creates

By slowing down to notice light and shadow, children develop the habit of looking more closely at the world around them. These moments of wonder nurture curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of discovering how things work- one of the greatest gifts we can offer young learners.
