From Our World to Yours

Hi everyone!

We've had such a fun month at nursery!

One of our favourite days was our Summer Picnic. Our Oak children who are going to big school in September worked really hard to make their own crowns and hobby horses. It took lots of thinking, planning and creating, and then we got to celebrate them all together. We clapped really loudly to wish them lots of luck on their next adventure! We also enjoyed music, puppet shows and lots of delicious food made especially for us by Mrs Murphy.

We also had some very special visitors from The Brent Primary School. They came to see how we help everyone feel like they belong at KatieB Kids. They loved seeing how we use Makaton, symbols and lots of different ways to help everyone communicate. They told us how happy, settled and engaged we all looked, and they're excited to come back again soon to learn even more.

A couple of weeks ago, FINALLY our potatoes were ready to dig up after lots of patience! We all helped to harvest them, wash away the soil and turn them into a delicious potato salad using fresh chives from our herb garden. It was so exciting to taste something we had grown ourselves! Connected Through Movement

At KatieB Kids, we know that connection begins long before children have the words to express themselves. Before they communicate through language, they connect through movement- reaching out to others, exploring their environment and discovering what their bodies can do. These early physical experiences lay the foundations not only for learning, but also for emotional wellbeing, confidence and positive relationships.

As part of our Let's Nurture Futures™ framework, Let's Connect celebrates the relationships children build with themselves, with others and with the world around them. Through purposeful physical play, children develop body awareness, emotional regulation and resilience, helping them feel safe, capable and connected as they grow.

What does this mean?

Research consistently shows that movement is fundamental to children's emotional and mental wellbeing. Every opportunity to climb, balance, swing, crawl or explore strengthens the neurological pathways that support attention, self-regulation and resilience. As Helen Battelley describes it, movement is the brain's first language, helping children feel organised and secure before they are ready to communicate, concentrate or manage their emotions.

At KatieB Kids, movement is thoughtfully woven throughout every day. Whether children are climbing, exploring Forest School, relaxing in our hammocks, navigating obstacle courses or taking managed risks outdoors, these experiences support far more than physical development. They help children build confidence, manage emotions, develop positive relationships and feel connected to both the people and environments around them.

What children gain from this

Through purposeful physical play, children develop:

• confidence and resilience through mastering new challenges

• emotional regulation and strategies for managing strong feelings

• improved concentration and readiness for learning

To try at home

Children don't need expensive equipment or structured activities to experience the benefits of movement. Simple opportunities to be active together can have a lasting impact on both physical and emotional wellbeing.

You could try:

• visiting local parks, woodlands or open spaces to climb, balance and explore together

• creating simple obstacle courses using cushions, blankets or garden equipment

• encouraging activities that involve pushing, pulling, carrying or climbing safely

• dancing together to favourite songs or going for family walks

• making time for active outdoor play every day, whatever the weather

When children are given the freedom to move, explore and challenge themselves, they are doing far more than developing physical skills. They are building confidence, resilience and meaningful connections (with themselves, with others and with the world around them) that will support their wellbeing for years to come.

The Role Model

We know that children learn far more from what they experience than from what they are told. Every interaction, conversation and response from the adults around them shapes how they come to understand themselves, other people and the world. Long before children are able to explain their values, they are observing ours.

The Role Model aspiration recognises that educators have the privilege and responsibility of demonstrating the behaviours, attitudes and values we hope children will develop themselves. Through our everyday actions, we model kindness, patience, curiosity, respect and resilience, helping children build the social and emotional foundations they will carry throughout life.

What does this mean?

Being a positive role model means recognising that children are constantly watching, listening and learning from us. Every greeting, every conversation and every response to challenge provides an opportunity to demonstrate how we communicate respectfully, solve problems and care for others.

Rather than simply telling children to be kind, patient or respectful, we show them what these qualities look like in practice. We communicate thoughtfully with both children and colleagues, demonstrate empathy when emotions run high, and approach mistakes as opportunities for learning rather than reasons for criticism.

Curiosity is equally important. By asking questions, exploring alongside children and showing genuine enthusiasm for discovering new ideas, we demonstrate that learning is something to be enjoyed throughout life, not simply something that happens in childhood.

Finding the balance

Being a role model does not mean being perfect. Children benefit from seeing that adults make mistakes too, provided they also see how we respond to them.

At KatieB Kids, we aim to model emotional regulation rather than emotional suppression. If something goes wrong, we remain calm, acknowledge our feelings appropriately and work collaboratively to find solutions. This teaches children that all emotions are acceptable, but that our actions and responses matter.

We also strive to balance guidance with independence. Rather than solving every disagreement for children, we support them to listen to one another, express their feelings respectfully and work together towards solutions. Over time, these experiences help children develop confidence, empathy and resilience.

What children gain from this

When children are surrounded by positive role models, they naturally begin to mirror the behaviours they see.

They develop respectful language, learn to express emotions safely and become more confident asking for help when they need it. They begin to approach others with kindness and empathy, understanding that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Warm, calm and consistent interactions also help children feel emotionally secure. When children know they will be listened to, valued and supported, they become more willing to take risks in their learning, solve problems collaboratively and build positive relationships with those around them.

Ultimately, the values we model today become the habits and behaviours children carry into tomorrow.

A simple idea to try at home

Children notice the small moments far more than we often realise. This week, choose one everyday situation to consciously model the behaviour you'd like your child to develop.

You might say:

"I made a mistake there. That's okay. I'll try again."

"I wonder why that happened? Shall we find out together?"

"I can see you're feeling upset. Let's take a moment and work through it together."

"Thank you for helping me. That was very kind."

By modelling respectful communication, empathy, curiosity and calm problem-solving in everyday life, we show children that these values are not simply rules to follow, but ways of being. Every interaction is an opportunity to demonstrate the kind of person we hope they will one day become.

Harvesting Understanding

We believe that helping children develop a meaningful relationship with food begins long before they sit down at the table. When children grow, harvest, prepare and taste their own produce, they begin to understand that food has a story. It comes from the earth, through care, patience and time, not simply from supermarket shelves.

Let's Nurture Nature encourages children to develop a genuine connection with the natural world by experiencing its cycles first-hand. Through growing fruit, vegetables and herbs in our gardens, children become active participants in understanding where food comes from and the role they can play in caring for the environment.

What does this mean?

This month, our Grandi children harvested the potatoes they had patiently cared for over many weeks. After digging them from the soil, washing away the earth and examining the different shapes and sizes, they used their harvest to make fresh potato salad, flavoured with chives picked from our own herb garden.

For many children, this was a powerful moment of discovery. Potatoes were no longer something that simply appeared in a packet at the supermarket. They had watched them grow beneath the soil, experienced the excitement of digging them up and then transformed them into a meal they could enjoy together.

Experiences like these help children understand the journey from garden to plate in a tangible, memorable way. They begin to appreciate that food requires time, care and the right conditions to grow, fostering both patience and respect for the natural world.

Preparing food they've grown themselves also encourages children to be more adventurous with tasting unfamiliar foods. The sense of ownership and pride they feel often leads to a willingness to try something they may otherwise have been hesitant to eat.

What children gain from this

Through growing, harvesting and preparing food, children develop:

• an understanding of where food comes from

• appreciation for the time, care and patience involved in growing produce

• curiosity about plants, seasons and the natural world

• confidence in preparing and tasting fresh foods

• respect for nature and the environment that sustains us

• a sense of pride, achievement and responsibility

Most importantly, children begin to recognise that the food on their plate is connected to the living world around them. They develop an appreciation for the people, plants and processes that make every meal possible.

To try at home

You don't need a large vegetable patch to help your child understand where food comes from. Even a few herbs on a windowsill or a pot of tomatoes on a patio can provide valuable learning opportunities.

You could try:

• growing easy crops such as potatoes in a grow bag, herbs in pots or cherry tomatoes

• involving your child in watering, weeding and caring for plants each day

• harvesting ingredients together before preparing a simple meal or snack

• talking about where different foods come from when shopping or cooking together

• encouraging your child to wash, chop (with appropriate supervision) and taste the food they've helped to grow

When children experience the full journey from seed to plate, they gain far more than gardening skills. They develop curiosity, patience, responsibility and a lifelong appreciation for nature and the food it provides, understanding that some of the most rewarding experiences begin with getting their hands a little muddy.

Helping Children Respect Water

As the weather continues to be warm and children spend more time playing with paddling pools, sprinklers, beaches and garden water play, it's a wonderful opportunity to introduce simple water safety habits from an early age. Water can provide endless opportunities for fun, exploration and learning, but it also requires careful supervision and respect.

At KatieB Kids, we believe that children learn safe behaviours best through calm, consistent guidance rather than fear. By introducing water safety in positive, age-appropriate ways, we can help children enjoy water confidently while developing lifelong safe habits.

What does this mean?

Young children are naturally drawn to water. Whether it's a paddling pool, a bucket in the garden or a visit to the seaside, water captures their curiosity and invites exploration. However, children can get into difficulty surprisingly quickly, even in very shallow water, which is why close adult supervision is always essential.

Rather than simply telling children to "be careful", we can help them understand why we have safety rules and model these behaviours ourselves.

Some simple messages children can begin to understand include:

• always stay where a grown-up can see you near water

• sit down while playing in paddling pools

• never go near water without an adult

• always ask before playing with water

• listen carefully when an adult gives safety instructions

Children learn through repetition, so using the same simple language each time helps these messages become familiar and meaningful.

Whether you're in the garden, at the beach or visiting a swimming pool, you could try:

• staying within arm's reach whenever your child is in or near water

• talking about water safety using short, simple phrases your child can remember

• emptying paddling pools, buckets and water trays as soon as play has finished

• encouraging your child to sit rather than stand in paddling pools

• introducing swimming lessons when your child is ready

• modelling safe behaviour yourself by following water safety rules together

• praising your child whenever they remember to ask before going near water or follow a safety instruction

Every splash is an opportunity to learn. By combining close supervision with simple, consistent messages, we can help children develop a healthy respect for water while continuing to enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer.

Make Play a Part of your Everyday

As National Playday approaches, it's the perfect opportunity to celebrate something that often gets overlooked in adult life: play. While we naturally associate play with childhood, it is just as important for teenagers and adults. Play isn't a luxury or something we have to "earn" once everything else is done; it's an essential part of maintaining our mental health, wellbeing and resilience.

At KatieB Kids, we know that children learn best through play. But the same is true for adults. Whether it's gardening, board games, baking, painting, playing sport, dancing in the kitchen or simply laughing with family and friends, making time for playful moments helps us feel happier, healthier and more connected.

What does this mean?

Play provides us with an opportunity to switch off from everyday pressures and engage in activities simply because we enjoy them. In a world that often values productivity above all else, play reminds us that joy, curiosity and connection are valuable in their own right.

Some of the many benefits of making time to play include:

Project Work begins with children's curiosity. An interest in shadows, insects, construction or water might spark a question that leads to days or weeks of investigation. Rather than deciding the destination in advance, our educators observe carefully, listen closely and thoughtfully extend children's ideas through new experiences, resources and conversations.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, this approach sees children as capable, creative thinkers whose ideas deserve to be explored. When children are given time to revisit their thinking, they develop deeper understanding, greater confidence and the resilience to test, adapt and refine their ideas.

What children gain from this

Through Project Work, children develop:

• curiosity and a lifelong love of learning

• creativity and imaginative thinking

• problem-solving and critical thinking skills
