From Our World to Yours

Hello from all of us at KatieB Kids!

Autumn has brought so many things to explore, and we've been busy discovering, imagining, creating and playing together.

We've splashed in puddles, collected rainwater and searched our garden for worms and slugs. We've investigated pumpkins and winter vegetables, exploring what happens when we cut, peel, grate, mash and mix them. Some of us even opened our own autumn shop and made delicious pretend pumpkin soup for our educators!

Our imaginations have been taking us to some wonderful places. We've built rockets and travelled into space, created fairy houses and doors, and transformed sticks into magical wands. We've been using clay, paint, leaves and all sorts of interesting materials to bring our ideas to life, sometimes discovering something completely unexpected along the way.

We've also been learning to do new things for ourselves. We've tried different tools, explored unfamiliar textures, climbed, balanced and moved our bodies in different ways. Sometimes we've needed a little help, and sometimes we've surprised ourselves with what we can do!

There have been lots of moments when we've worked together too. We've shared ideas while building with LEGO, made artwork together and discovered that our friends sometimes have ideas we hadn't thought of ourselves.

Our educators have been listening to our ideas, noticing what interests us and helping us discover new possibilities along the way.

We can't wait to see where our ideas take us next!

What Does It Mean to Feel Known?

Think about how much you know about your child. Their favourite things, what makes them laugh, the people they look for and the little things that help when they're having a difficult day.

But there's an interesting difference between knowing a child and a child experiencing themselves as known.

Imagine a child who has spent several days trying to build something. When they finally succeed, they call an adult over to see. To someone passing by, it might look like another construction made from blocks. But an adult who understands what the child has been working towards might recognise just how much that moment means to them.

The difference lies not simply in the adult knowing about the child's interest, but in how they respond. By recognising the effort behind that achievement, they offer the child an opportunity to experience that something important to them has been noticed and understood.

The same question can help us think about children's friendships. Some connections are full of conversation and shared activity; others develop through quieter moments or simply enjoying being alongside someone. What matters to a child within these relationships may not always be obvious to us.

As part of our ongoing enquiry into belonging, we're becoming more curious about these everyday experiences. Not simply who children spend time with, but what their relationships might mean to them, and how we can listen more carefully to their perspectives.

A little thought to take home

Is there something your child has been especially keen to show or share with you recently? What might that moment tell you about what matters to them?

Sometimes, it's through these small, everyday exchanges that children have opportunities to experience something important: the things that matter to me matter to someone else, too.

When Should We Step In?

Picture your child trying something new. Perhaps they're balancing along a fallen log, working out how to climb onto a platform or finding a way to move something heavy across the garden.

As adults, our instinct might be to help. We can see what they're trying to do, anticipate where they might struggle and imagine a quicker or easier way.

But what happens if we wait a moment?

Children learn a great deal through movement. As they climb, balance, stretch, crawl and experiment, they're discovering what their bodies can do, how to coordinate their movements and how to respond when something doesn't quite work.

During our recent educator development day, we explored how children's senses help them understand where their bodies are, how they're moving and how to respond to the world around them. This developing body awareness plays an important part in learning to balance, coordinate movements and approach physical challenges. It also reminded us why children need opportunities to move freely, experiment and discover what their bodies can do.

When we watch children approaching a physical challenge, there's often more happening than we first realise. A child balancing along a log may be making tiny adjustments to their position. Another might try several different movements before finding a way to climb onto a platform. Noticing these attempts can help us recognise when a child is making progress independently, when they might benefit from encouragement and when they genuinely need support.

These observations help us decide what might support their learning.

Sometimes an encouraging word or a steady hand is exactly what's needed. Sometimes we might adapt the environment or introduce a new challenge. And sometimes, provided the child is safe, the most thoughtful response is to give them a little more time.

The aim isn't to avoid helping children, but to recognise when our involvement might support their exploration and when it might interrupt something they're beginning to work out for themselves.

A little thought to take home

Next time your child is trying a new physical challenge, pause for a moment and notice:

• What are they trying to achieve?

• Are they experimenting with different ways of moving?

• Are they asking for help, or do they simply need more time?

Stay close enough to keep them safe and offer support when they need it. You might be surprised by what they discover when they have a little space to work things out.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is notice what children are already working out for themselves.

When a Little Idea Becomes a Bigger Enquiry

Where do children's ideas take them when we give them room to grow?

Sometimes an investigation begins with something an educator has carefully prepared. At other times, it begins with a child's unexpected suggestion — and takes everyone somewhere they hadn't anticipated.

During Forest School this month, our children were creating fairy houses using natural and recycled materials. As they experimented with different ways of constructing their houses, one child suggested making fairy doors.

It was a small suggestion, but one that opened up new possibilities.

The children began working with wood, exploring how to create and decorate their doors and learning to use tools with the support of their educators. What began as imaginative play developed into opportunities to investigate materials, practise new skills and discover different ways of bringing an idea to life.

What makes this experience interesting isn't simply the fairy doors the children created. It's that an idea offered by a child became part of the direction of the investigation. Rather than following a plan towards an outcome already decided, the children had an opportunity to influence what happened next.

Following an interest is only the beginning.

When we watch children playing, it's tempting to focus on what they're doing. They're building a house, collecting sticks or making something from wood. But what might they be trying to understand?

Perhaps they're investigating how different materials fit together, discovering what a tool can do or working out how to turn an idea into something they can hold.

These possibilities are worth exploring, rather than assuming we already know what interests a child.

Once we begin to recognise what children might be investigating, we can think differently about how to support them.

Perhaps a new material offers another possibility. Perhaps they need help learning to use a tool safely, or an opportunity to practise something they're finding difficult. Sometimes they may simply need more time to explore an idea in their own way.

But the important part is what happens afterwards.

Did the new material open up another possibility? Did the children return to their idea, try something different or take their investigation in an unexpected direction?

By paying attention to how children respond, we can begin to understand whether our involvement has helped their thinking develop — or whether something else might be more useful.

This is how an enquiry can develop over time. Rather than following a sequence of activities towards an outcome decided in advance, children's ideas, experiences and discoveries help influence its direction.

Not every interest becomes a long project, and not every investigation needs to produce something to take home. Sometimes the most valuable discoveries happen while children are still working out what they want to do.

Perhaps the most interesting part of a children's project isn't where it begins or even what they eventually create. It's the thinking that develops along the way.

When we become curious about what children are trying to understand, rather than focusing only on what they're doing, we may begin to notice possibilities we would otherwise have missed.

A little thought to take home

Next time your child becomes fascinated by something, whether it's building a den, collecting stones or creating an imaginary world, try asking yourself:

What might they be trying to find out?

Perhaps there's something you could offer that would help them explore their idea further. A different material, a little practical help or simply another opportunity to return to it tomorrow.

Then notice what happens. Does their interest develop, change direction or lead to something neither of you expected?

Sometimes the most interesting part of supporting children's ideas is discovering where they take us.

A Closer Look

A worm, a muddy hand and a moment of discovery.

Have you ever watched a young child become completely fascinated by something you might ordinarily walk past?

A worm in the garden, an ant carrying a crumb or a snail making its way across a path can become the beginning of an investigation. No activity has been planned, no outcome decided. The child has simply noticed something interesting and chosen to explore it.

This is one of the remarkable things about children's play. What looks like a simple moment of curiosity can involve some surprisingly sophisticated thinking. Children may be observing closely, noticing differences, making comparisons or beginning to develop their own explanations for what they see.

They aren't necessarily setting out to learn something. They're following an interest, and learning may develop through the experience itself.

What has caught their attention?

When your child discovers something interesting, try giving them a little time before asking questions or offering explanations.

Perhaps they're watching how a worm moves, noticing the way its body stretches and contracts or wondering why it has appeared after the rain.

What interests them might be quite different from what first caught your attention.

Once you have a sense of what they're exploring, you can join their investigation. Perhaps you'll look more closely together, offer a magnifying glass or wonder what might happen next.

The aim isn't to introduce as much information as possible. It's to create opportunities for children to develop the ideas they're already beginning to explore.

Make room for care

There's something else worth noticing when children's play brings them into contact with living creatures.

A worm isn't simply something interesting to examine. It's a living creature with needs of its own.

As you explore together, you might wonder where it would be most comfortable, how to observe it without causing harm or why it's important to return it gently to a suitable place.

In this way, curiosity can become an opportunity to consider another living thing's needs. Children are not only discovering more about the natural world; they're beginning to explore their relationship with it.

What if you don’t know the answer?

Perhaps your child asks why worms come out when it rains, or how they find their way underground.

You might know the answer. You might not.

Either way, there's an opportunity to explore the question together.

Research into early childhood learning highlights the value of shared thinking: children developing ideas and understanding through meaningful exchanges with other people. Sometimes this involves an adult offering knowledge or introducing a new possibility. At other times, it begins with two people wondering about something together.

So next time your child stops to investigate something you might ordinarily walk past, perhaps stop with them.

You don't need a planned activity, special equipment or an answer to every question.

Just a little time, some curiosity and a willingness to discover something together.

The Things Children Know

Is there something your child knows an extraordinary amount about?

Perhaps they can recognise a vehicle simply by its sound, know exactly how a family recipe is made or identify birds in the garden that you wouldn't recognise yourself.

You might find yourself wondering, “How do they know all that?”

Children learn an extraordinary amount simply by being part of everyday life. They watch, listen, help, practise and gradually build knowledge through their experiences with family, friends and the wider community.

Researchers use the term funds of knowledge to describe the valuable knowledge and skills children develop through these experiences.

It reminds us that learning doesn't begin when an adult decides to teach something. Children already bring a wealth of understanding into every new experience.

Once we begin to recognise the knowledge children bring from their everyday lives, familiar moments of play can take on new meaning.

A child carefully arranging chairs might be recreating something they've experienced at home. Another who confidently explains how to care for an animal may be drawing on knowledge developed through family life.

What might appear to be simple imaginative play could involve children drawing on quite sophisticated understanding.

Rather than assuming we know what their play represents, we can become curious. What do they already understand? What experiences might they be drawing upon? And what could help them explore those ideas further?

Sometimes a new material or an interesting question opens up another possibility. At other times, the most valuable thing we can do is listen, take an interest and recognise that the child may have something to teach us.

This is part of what makes learning a shared experience. Children bring knowledge from their lives into nursery, while new discoveries and experiences become part of what they take home.

A little thought to take home

Next time your child shows an unexpected depth of knowledge about something, take a moment to enjoy what they know.

Perhaps it's something they've learned from a grandparent, through helping at home or simply by following an interest.

Rather than immediately offering more information, invite them to share their understanding.

“You know a lot about that. I'd love you to show me.”

Or simply listen, watch and enjoy the details they choose to share.

You might discover something about your child's world that you hadn't noticed before.

And perhaps, for a moment, your child becomes the expert and you become the learner.

Caring for Ourselves, Caring for Others

When we think about caring for young children, we naturally consider what they need from us: time, patience, understanding, reassurance and someone who notices when things aren't quite right.

But how often do we think about what the adults caring for them might need?

As parents, grandparents and educators, we bring much more to our relationships with children than our responsibilities towards them. We bring our own experiences, feelings, interests and needs.

And just like children, we benefit from relationships in which we feel known, understood and supported. Being recognised as a person, rather than simply for the role we fulfil, can make an important difference to our sense of belonging.

It's easy for our own wellbeing to slip down the list when everyday life is busy. There are people to care for, things to organise and demands on our time. Sometimes we become so accustomed to looking after others that we forget to consider what we might need ourselves.

Caring relationships aren't simply about what we give to others. They are also shaped by what we experience ourselves: whether someone notices when we're struggling, takes an interest in what matters to us or offers support when we need it.

The care we receive matters, too.

This doesn't mean we must always feel calm, patient or positive. Nor should looking after ourselves become another responsibility to manage. We all have difficult days, and sometimes what we need most is simply for someone to notice, listen or offer a little support.

As the seasons change and the days become shorter, perhaps there's an opportunity to think about the people and experiences that help us feel well. A familiar conversation, time outdoors, a shared laugh or a moment when somebody understands what we need without us having to explain.

A little thought to take home

We spend so much time noticing what matters to the children in our lives. What helps you feel known, cared for and supported?

Perhaps it's worth sharing that thought with someone close to you, or taking a moment to recognise the people who already make that difference.

Because the relationships that help children flourish matter to the adults within them, too.
